US e-commerce giant Amazon has announced plans to launch a new office in the Canadian province of British Columbia, creating in excess of 1,000 jobs over the next three years.
Amazon will lease a new 4,500-square-meter building in Vancouver. The office, leased from Oxford Properties, is scheduled to open in 2020 and will be the company’s second corporate office in the Canadian city.
The online retailer, which has already employed more than 5,000 people in Canada, says the new office would double its workforce in Vancouver from 1,000 to 2,000.
“We are among the largest employers of software engineers in Canada and look forward to continuing to create new job opportunities for Canadians,” said Alexandre Gagnon, Vice President of Amazon Canada and Mexico.
Local media reports state that there are tens of thousands of Canadian small businesses and entrepreneurs selling on Amazon.ca that achieved a record $1 billion in sales in 2016.
“The growth we’ve seen from selling on Amazon has helped us add 12 full- and part-time jobs in Vancouver with plans for another 12 in the next 18 months,” said Kevin Pasco, Co-Founder, CMO of Nested Naturals, in a statement.
The expansion in British Columbia has nothing to do with the company’s plans to launch a second headquarters in North America.
Besides US cities, 11 Canadian locations, including Vancouver, have submitted bids to host the headquarters, which Amazon says will create about 50,000 jobs.
