If you’re thinking of heading to Mexico for the holidays, be aware that some areas have become known for transmission of the Zika virus.
California public health officials are warning travelers to protect themselves, stating that popular tourist destinations such as Cancun, Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Ixtapa, and Mazatlan, are afflicted with the virus.
“We ask people traveling to Mexico, or any other place where Zika exists, to take steps to prevent mosquito bites for three weeks after a trip,” say officials.
The states of Baja California Sur and Sonora have recently reported local Zika virus transmission. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers any travel to Mexico to be a potential risk for the virus infection.
