Oracle Enters Cloud Market in Colombia; Gains Traction in LatAm

Oracle has expanded its cloud computing services to Colombia, agreeing to use a data center owned by regional telecom carrier Claro.

Claro agreed to migrate more than 100 on-premises servers to the cloud, in addition to reselling Oracle’s cloud platform to businesses around the country.

Claro operates three data centers in Colombia. Oracle will use the Triara facility, located on the Bogota-Medellin highway.

This is Oracle’s fourth cloud region in Latin America, with the other three based in Brazil, Chile and Mexico. Another one will be launched in Chile by the end of 2022, according to the tech firm.

Analysts have described the alliance with Claro as a shrewd move. Claro is a subsidiary of Mexican telecom giant America Movil, which has operations in many countries across the region.

The telecom carrier plans to invest US$150 million in building a portfolio of digital solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises. Claro’s portfolio includes analytics, cloud, big data, cybersecurity and the Internet of Things, among other services.

Latin America’s cloud market has become a beehive of activity in recent years, with large providers – from Amazon to Google and Huawei to Microsoft – vying to win over new clients.
