Narayan AmmachchiThe Dominican Republic has tapped Samsung to equip its graduates with digital skills and offer specialized training in programming and coding.
The program, which will train around 100 Dominicans in 2023, is coordinated by the country’s investment promotion agency, ProDominicana, and the regional educational organization Technological Institutes of the Americas (ITLA).
ITLA, which has taught data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence in the past, reportedly agreed to provide teachers to the training program.
Samsung will provide trainees with electronic gadgets and allocate them a room to experiment in its labs, in addition to paying for the electricity and software they use.
Candidates will later serve Samsung as interns for up to 400 hours, gaining hands-on experience of what they learned during the training.
In a survey conducted by the Ministry of Economy in late 2022, more than 40% of businesses on the island said they find it extremely difficult to hire skilled workers, particularly professionals with technological skills. About 70% said they have vacancies in their offices.
Omar Mendez Lluberes, Rector of ITLA, explained that the program will end the need to “import” qualified workers from other countries.
