Telefónica Launches Prototype of First Open Access Network to Support Edge Computing

Telefónica’s new Open Access Network combines the advantages of the components from different providers in a simple, scalable, and flexible access network architecture and will enable the deployment of new services. The prototype was presented at the Mobile World Congress 2019 and is built in a convergent scenario of mobile, fixed and edge computing. Telefónica is already testing Edge computing in Spain and soon in Brazil, too.

The Open Access Network offers new functionalities to customers such as the self-management of network capacity and the self-provision of fibre access. It comes to customers households in the form of a router that integrates wifi 6 for the first time. Based on the disaggregation of the hardware and software of network equipment, the use of universal purpose servers and the opening of interfaces, this prototype supports Telefónica’s  efforts  deploy future 5G and fibre networks and equipment in customer’s houses.
