Telus International Opts for Open Approach to Learning for Philippines Employees

Canadian BPO firm Telus International is freeing its Philippines employees to acquire any new skills they want – even including those not relevant to the customer services industry.

They can learn new languages – such as Japanese, French, and Mandarin – or enroll their names in institutes offering short term courses in subjects, including culinary, fashion designing, and performing arts.

To meet the needs of its staff, Telus has partnered with several private institutes, which send their teachers to the company’s office where the classes are held.

The goal behind the move is the company’s long-held belief that people perform well at their workplace if they are pursuing their passions.

Telus runs five sites in the Asian country and has employed over 12,000 people. Most of its offices boast a clinic and a pharmacy staffed with professional doctors. “Healthy team members create happy, satisfied customers,” says the customer services provider in its website.

Recently, it has even launched short term courses for the friends and families of its senior employees, according to Manila Standard.

At a recent workshop, the company’s employees were trained in the art of grinding coffee beans and making tastier coffee. The culinary skills were taught by Manila-based Center for Culinary Arts.

“We put a premium value on work-life integration,” reported the news daily quoting the company’s senior official Frederick Estacio as saying. “The caring culture that we foster and cultivate helps us become better in what we do, and an important part of that is creating a work environment that is conducive to continuous learning.”
