Narayan AmmachchiThe President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, announced that his administration is putting the finishing touches to a program aimed at attracting tech talent from foreign countries.
The plan is being cooked in tandem by the country’s Ministry of Economy and the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technologies, according to the President.
The program will satiate the “hunger for talent” in Uruguay’s tech sector, the president said while addressing a forum organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) in the city of Punta Del Este.

Uruguay is developing a “legal tool” for technology companies to hire “either Uruguayans living abroad or international talent that will come to live in our country”, he added.
“Uruguay wants to become a technology hub, not just in the Southern Cone but also in all of Latin America,” stated the President, adding that the country’s revenue from the exportation of software services has exceeded US$1 billion in recent years.
The government of Uruguay expects to leverage the acceleration of remote working arrangements brought up by the COVID-19 pandemic. “It doesn’t matter where you live,” said Lacalle.
With that in mind, authorities plan to enact a law that would facilitate the hiring of foreign talent by local companies.
